I do not know about nice books, but I just got finished reading David Sedaris When Engulfed in Flames and I thought that Hal Duncan's duology Vellum/Ink was a hard read, but a good one. I also liked Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series (5 in paperback, 1 in hardcover).
