I decided to make us go into the city to see what the Queen Victoria Market is all about. Compared to the Saturday Market, its quite a bit larger in size (and by quite a bit I mean at LEAST double) but the negative to that is that the same booths are in multiple areas of the market. The only benefit to that is the exercise you get from walking aisle by aisle. So, lets think of it this wayits Seattles Pike Place Market (tons of fresh seafood and meats galore) meets Portlands Saturday Market meets Portlands Farmers Market.

It was established in 1878 and half of market is dedicated to the sale of fresh produce. Not only that, but the Market is incredibly green in terms of sustainability. From solar energy and the recycling program to water harvesting and storm water quality, this place is definitely Portlands sister city if Ive ever seen one. The market was slammed with dudes yelling JUST $10 A KILO! and women putting pressure on you to buy a pineapple for just $1!!.

Once you get past the massive block of fresh produce, you enter the merchandise area and what an area it is. There were booths with Aboriginal art, Australia jumpers, your grandmas lingerie, knock off kids toys, and everything in between. Something the whole family will enjoy. Theres even a Spanish Doughnut van, though the cooks were hardly anything of Spanish descent. You could easily get lost in this market (if youre a newbie such as myself) but thats okay if you have $5 on you because you could buy a plethora of goodies to get you by.

Take this awesome Star Wars toy for example. Notice anything about this that is Star Wars? No, except the picture and the font. Its a gun that fires foam darts and is Most welcome among kids. Below that was a Spider Man AK-47, because thats totally what Spidey uses when hes in a bind.

The market was incredible and with such ridiculously low prices on meat and produce, its made me realize that Ive taken our local market for granted. Why buy from Albertsons or, for gods sake WINCO, when I could be buying fresh for a grip cheaper. Plus, nothing beats the experience.

those are some crazy colorful photos of the market. I miss color, we dont have much in the way of color here...everything is a muted tan or gray and coated in a fine layer of dust and sand.

I hope you're having a great time in Australia! Enjoy yourself!
