This is a long update as its mostly for me and people who love me dearly tongue and read my ramblings lol.

Life up here is better. I was beginning to think my internship wasn't all that fabulous of an internship. But today I got offered an opportunity to write a column and centerfold story for the annual Come U.P. insert attracting people to the U.P. and highlight it's qualities. My column is supposed to be about what it's like being a newcomer to the area and what I've found attractive. It's got to be researched. I guess I'll plan that over memorial day weekend. I also have to write my berry picking story for that insert as well.

My plate is full. I have that column and the berry-picking story, as well as stories about AmeriCorps, tobacco-free day, invasive aquatic species, special education adults and them developing two greenhouses, the Dollar Bay waste water system and a story about Tech students up here for the summer and what they're doing.

That's just for the Gazette. I have a story on the budget situation (**see below), brain tumor research going on at NMU and a bunch of briefs to do about smaller things like dining services increasing rates, public tv/radio and two new majors being offered. In addition to all that, I have to be down in Marquette a lot these next two weeks to play editor for the summer issue and I have to write a query letter, profile piece and 1500 final magazine article for my feature writing class.

But it's a healthy stress. I really love all the great clips I'm going to have an opportunity to write. I was looking at my friend Chris' work at The News Record in Greensboro, NC. He writes so well but his internship at a larger paper isn't allowing him to get a lot of work published.

So inaddition to my happiness/stress over all my work, today was pay day! Hooray! It's all already spent but at least some bills are paid. Not enough, but some.

Mary, Garrett and I went out to dinner at The Library tonight. I really like Garrett and wish he would talk more. He seems like he hasn't made any friends since he's been here. He's a really good person though, and very smart.

Mary talks too much, but tomorrow is her last day.

I had SASHIMI GRADE AHI TUNA! Which was completely raw in my mango salad. Holy cow it was incredible. I didn't think something that good could be made in the Upper Peninsula.

I've smoked two cigarettes in the past week. I s'pose it's not so bad considering all the stress. Gotta stop, though. I was doing so good for awhile.

**I spent most of today reading about and talking to Cindy Paavola at Northern Michigan University about the GOP-controlled house legislation in Michigan that would basically render NMU broke while ensuring schools in rich Republican suburbs like Rochester Hills or wherever Oakland University is - get more money. NMU would receive a 33 percent cut over the next 6 years!! While every other school in the state except Wayne State (which happens to be in downtown Detroit - hmm, doesn't sound very Republican, does it?) get 27 percent INCREASES!

How does that seem fair? It's not. I hate Republicans and their constant attempts to get rid of a decent governor (Granholm.)

I hate when dick-headed Republicans propose cutting funding to a pretty damn good school. I mean, sure, if you don't value your health (NMU's great nursing program) or your children's education (NMU has a great teacher education program) then I suppose the school and its students are useless.

But NMU has the largest number of Pell Grant recipients in the state of Michigan. This proposal takes money from poorer students trying to make it for themselves and gives it to rich people who already have federally funded research.

Way to think with your pocketbooks, you sleazy, no-good Republican shits.

How blind America is boggles me...frown
