It's just that at one point a character says, "But all gentlemen wear swords..." When he is being arrested by the police. But use of the sword, especially in the re-enactment groups teaches control; control of yourself, control of the sword so that you don't injure your friends who you are fighting against, and when the battle or training session is over, you help them up and then go for a drink together.
