The purpose of art, of music in particular, is to express something, usually an emotion or an idea. It is generally of a sympathetic nature, that is, the artist is trying to help the audience feel what he feels, think what he thinks, share an idea and connect because of it.
The purpose of the Apocalypse Syndicate was to hurt the audience, to leave them feeling violated or assaulted in some way. It is taking the artistic expression found in other mediums like exploitation films or snuff/shock films and applying it to sound. The idea is that art can cause pain, that sound can be used to make you a victim. In short, art can hurt, and the Apocalypse Syndicate was created to hurt you.
In short, this was and is an industrial noise project. What does that mean? Some obscure few of you may be familiar with bands like Dissecting Table or Masonna, Gruntsplatter or pretty much any band on Cold Meat Industry records. Yes, all of that is classified as Industrial Death or Industrial Noise, but most of it is computer generated and lacks the texture of my project. The Apocalypse Syndicate uses live and captured samples, improperly uses recording equipment and instruments to generate sound that they would not normally generate (simple things like running microphones against amps and a keyboard through distortion pedals) and tie it all together with a theme.
The first demo was called Industrial Masturbation. The title will remain the same, though the overall structure of the demo will change. Orginally it was 4 tracks that were 22 minutes in length each. The final track on the demo was captured entirely by accident and only included because it had a sound I could not determine how I created, and the overall quality of the track was very poor. It will not be redone. That leaves me with three tracks. The third track was almost identical to the first, with a variation on the keyboard, primarily played at a higher volume and without the distortion. I will not be reworking this concept either, as it had little impact on the overall demo and was included primarily to fill the second side of the demo tape.
So now I am down to two tracks, 22 minutes in length originally. They are in essence the same song, but with a different end and different intention. That is the form that the revisited demo will take, and if all goes well its rebirth will begin early next week.
This is the last you will probably hear about the project until it is complete, at which time I will unleash a little of my inner hell for those of you interested.
