I'm off to Vermont for a couple of days.
Without the fam.
Anaxarete can't spare any time this spring and someone has to go check on the house and mow the lawn.
That would be me.
And Stella.
So we are leaving in about 30 minutes for a 6 hour drive.
We'll be back Sunday I think.

So, I leave you with an observation and a question.
I wrote this in response to a statement by the always interesting and fabulous Cybele (you should really visit her), in which she mentioned the dumbfounding tenacity with which today's Republicans deify Ronald Reagan:
Well they gotta deify SOMEBODY.
How far back would consevatives otherwise have to go?
Bush Sr?
No.
Ford?
No.
Nixon?
No.
Ike?
No.
Uhhh.
Who was the next last conservative president?
I don't even know.
They have NOBODY.
Barry Goldwater?
Too crazy.
And not president.
Who do liberals have ?
I never liked Clinton.
I'm proud of Jimmy Carter.
LBJ was strong on civil rights.
Our presidential deity I suppose would be JFK.
But you can go not much further back and you have FDR.
I guess Republicans would really honestly have to go back to Teedy (or as you know him, Theodore Roosevelt).
He was the last great Republican president.
And he was an activist and absolutely NOT a conservative.
So much so in fact that he, and another GOP prez, Abe Lincoln, is my my fave prez ever!
How pathetic is that?
Reagan's all they got and they hang onto him and his VERY lucky and well-timed presidency like grim death.
So my question is this, and it is NOT simply rhetorical:
If it were not for Reagan (a dubious choice at best) which Republican President would Republicans trot out as an example of a successful and inspirational conservative administration?
I'm serious.
