The Sparrow -- a religious sci-fi book about a short & scrawny Puerto Rican Jesuit who travels into space in order to meet God and fulfill his vocation, only to be gang raped and mutilated by his poetry-reciting God -- is being made into a movie. starring Brad Pitt. I'd like to see how they swing that one.

Last night I worked at a Maxim party held at an abattoir-turned-night club in the old slaughterhouse district of St. Paul. My job for a few hours included "taking photos" of people (led by a midget) with Maxim models (one's tampon string was hanging from her panties. that's an unpleasant word. panties.) with a camera that didn't hold any film. The guys at this shindig had greased up hair, wore unbuttoned collar shirts that revealed chest hair, and reeked of date rape. The women were all "beautiful," sure, but lacked something. They just didn't seem real. thus. uhm. they didn't really evoke anything in me. One fellow exclaimed that one of the Maxim models was hot, but shit, I would've taken his cute asian girlfriend over the Maxim model any day. The job went until 4 AM and then I had to work this morning at 9 AM. oy vey. Still, it was the easiest 150 bucks I've made since the surge of fishermen at the docks.

Roughly a hundred teachers are being laid off in the Minneapolis school district. cuz what America need now more than ever is fewer educators, goddammit. And one of the few who remains really oughtta be one of those trendy teachers who comes to school encouraging students the necessity of buying Gucci purses and $200 pants, especially when we have families who prostitute their children just so they can put food on the table. This is truly the greatest of all nations.

I recently read Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel, which has to be the best graphic novel I've read since Blankets. It's a memoir/auto/biography about a boyish lesbian who grows up with a funeral-directing, English-teaching, house-restoring, closeted homosexual father who "committed" suicide. very good. and chock full of literary references and allusions for any nerds out there.

Well, mark me down as one of the people who absolutely abhors this website's new setup. My loathing for it is fathomless. it is without fathom. For a pay-site I feel like I'm getting totally jacked. only 15 minutes to edit (I'm a constant editor even though I'm sure nobody notices). ugly layout. I hate the 5 Fave Friends thing; now I can't see them all! and everything is just inconvenient to get to. EVERYTHING. Was there really any necessity for the old setup to be changed? I can't accurately articulate my disdain. ::grumble::

hehe. I likes the onion.

The Sparrow sounds like an interesting book. The kind that doesn't usually get made in to a movie. I think I will have to put that on my "to read" list.

i like the word panties. I especially like to use it to refer to men's underwear. It's my right amount of macho for me test. If a man has a fit when I tell him to pick up his panties then he is too macho for me. If they just seem slightly uncomfortable with the word or laugh, shake their hide or smile, they are probably ok. If they giggle like a little girl, blush or get that weird "deer in the headlights look" then they probably need a little more macho in their life. wink

This country's priorities are all out of whack. Will you be affected by the layoff? I can't remember if you are still in school or not...

Fun Home sounds good too. I'll have to check that out.

You sound just like thejuanupsman. He vehemently hates the changes. So far they have not bothered me too much. I was away so long that I don't really remember exactly how it all used to be. I think that helps. Although I do remember that I liked the old color scheme better. This is too bright and sterile.

Ha I didn't even notice that typo (Freudian slip?) until I read your comment in my journal. Now that I think about it though, shaking your hide would be an even better response. biggrin

I play mostly Pinochle & Spades. I know most card games but those two are my favorites.
Oh and I love Poker, but according to thejuanupsman I am not very good. whatever Apparently I have a lot of tells, a lousy poker face, can't comprehend the concept of pot odds and bet way too aggressively. I think I do ok. Except for the few times I have played with him. blackeyed

I would love to go out for a drink and a game sometime. If I ever get out from under the mound of work that I have to do. Speaking of which...I better get back to it all. Hope you are having a great day. smile
