I always found it strange and very telling that he had seen the movie of Fahrenheit 451 but not read the book. I had tried to convince him of the incongruity of this, but he had steadfastly held to the belief that only watching served him well enough. It was subtle differences like this; small ironies that werent shared that finally caused the end. Sometimes, I wished for simplicity. I wished that he had beaten me or cheated on me, instead of divergence over a book he hadnt read and a movie I hadnt seen.

" The same infinite detail and awareness could be projected through the radios and televisors, but are not. No, no, it's not books at all you're looking for! Take it where you can find it, in old phonograph records, old motion pictures, and in old friends; look for it in nature and look for it in yourself. Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us. Of course you couldn't know this, of course you still can't understand what I mean when I say all this." - Ray Bradbury

I second StickyRice, Bradbury has been one of my greatest influences as a writer.

As for the difference over a book or movie, no I don't think that's any less reason to end a relationship, not if it a) forms a pattern, and b) reveals a deeper divergence between people.

I'm starting to think we all just suck at spending more than a couple years together. Once we decide we 'know' the other person it seems to slowly disintegrate, perhaps this is just the second law of thermodynamics at work. Still, we have the ability to be creative, and somehow I can't help but feel that the secret to getting along is in being creative and evolving... course I could also be completely wrong... wink
