My name is Ocean and I am a book addict.
It happens, yes. Once you get hooked on a good story you are there for good. You can't have enough pages, enough chapters, enough books.
I started enjoying books when I was 6 or so. I used to go to the school’s library and read about greek gods and wolves. I was filling my mind with so much information, I still remember a lot of things.
I guess the passion for reading comes with a passion of knowing and a vivid imagination. I’ve had both since I can remember. As a child I was always asking questions about how things worked and about history, mostly mythology. Sometimes my questions made my mother uncomfortable, because she had no idea what to answer (one time I asked my mother what’s a whore, and her first reaction was to tell me that a whore was a woman with big feet, I was 7 at the time).
But this blog is about a book obsession.
We had to read for school, but I started reading on my own at 12 or 13 when a friend of my mother brought us a lot of books. I started reading “The great loves of Catherine the Great” (yes, it had its part where it should have been rated +17, or more) and Alexander the Great. Both historical pieces, written as novels.
I must confess I did not finish Alexander the Great, it had over 3 volumes and it was too much for me.
After that I went with fantasy, because of the first harry potter movie I started reading that saga, and because of Lord of the Rings, I also started reading that. Because I was living in a fisherman’s town, I had a short supplie of books, so I started reading the same books over and over again.
At that time I was having problems with the kids at school, I was being bullied on a daily basis and my self esteem and social life were really bad/low. At that time my mother told me something that was going to stay with me forever: “books are your best friends”.
And indeed they were, and they became more than that. They became a window to other worlds, to adventure, to knowledge, to romance.
When we moved back to the capital city of my country, I started reading Shakespeare and Jane Austen, and I must say I am still a fan. My favorite book is Persuasion, of Jane Austen, and I have read it at least 3 times and watched the movie about other 3.
A couple of years ago I started reading books by Isabel Allende. As you may not know, she is Peruvian by birth, but moved to Chile when she was young. Anyways, she has been the first and only Latin American author I have read. And yes, I must continue, because we have some amazing writers.
Then, somehow, I ended up reading what they call Urban Fantasy. Books about werewolves, vampires, witches, etc. and when I found books that had also romance in them, I was in bliss.
I started reading the Sookie Stackhouse series. I had read the first 10 books in a month (thank goodness for .epub!) and started looking for more books.
There were it’s up and downs.. I ended up reading Twilight and realized I was too old to read it and find it perfect, or maybe it was the passive protagonist it had.
What I look for in a book is a female protagonist that is independent, strong, intelligent and a badass. And yes, I want romance too. I am a woman that wants everything, apparently.
In the last couple of years I found this two AMAZING series, that gave me everything I asked and more: The Kate Daniels series and the Mercy Thompson series.
Why am I talking about this right now? And why is this blog so long? (I feel like a bore)
I just finished the 8th book of the Mercy Thompson series, and it’s as good as I expected it to be. We have a female lead, that has a degree in history and works as a mechanic, because life is real and she couldn’t get a job as a history major. She is also a shifter who turns into a coyote. And a major point in the plot, is that she is native American. This has a lot to do with her roots and her being a shifter.
We have this strong woman, that is smart and knows her physical limits. She lives in a world surrounded by werewolves, and fae people, and vampires, and creatures of mythology!
The books also let you into the world she lives in, worrying about paying the bills and not getting herself killed by some freaky fae monster.
I highly recommend this books. I don’t want to say a lot about them but I have to say that they are one of my favorite book series for a reason. I can’t stop reading until I’m finished, and when I am, I’m sad because it wasn’t a bigger book.
So sorry for the long rant about books!
And I got a new tattoo over the weekend! ♥
