Working with a drum student and encountered some not so positive feedback last week from him on learning rhythms and subdivisions. “Boring” as he said. So I asked him, “what’s a song you like?” He said “can’t feel my face” by The Weekend.
Over the week I notated the rhythm of the prechorus and refrain vocal melody.
Skip to this morning: brought in the notation and had him learn and play it slow. Eventually we got it to song tempo and still he had no idea what he was playing. I said “ok, play it one more time and I’m gonna show you what you’re playing.”
Start singing what he’s playing and he literally stopped and was like “whoaaaa... what the heck?! That is cool!”
