There is such intensity in life right now. My grandfather is not expected to live much longer. He is essentially in a coma, peacefully and slowly dying. Everyone thought he would pass last weekend, but he's quietly hanging on.

In New Orleans, someone broke into my great-aunt's house to rob it and stabbed her multiple times. When my aunt's daughter came by to see why her mother hadn't answered the phone they shot her three times and then burned the house down.
I'd never met these relatives of mine and yet I'm totally stunned by the violence of this crime and by how close to home it hits. I'm sad for my father who has to deal with this while waiting for his step-father to pass away. I'm sad for my grandmother who loses a sister-in-law while watching her husband die, and I'm sad for those whose souls are so charred that they can do such a violent thing to a 90 year old woman.
