"An object in possession seldom retains the charm it had in pursuit." -- said by Pliny

What does this quote mean to you?

Does it pertain to "objects" of affection? Is the most enjoyable part of a relationship in the "chase?" Is it the challenge which makes an object so alluring? Once the desired is caught, does it lose its glitter? Remember when you were a little kid and you wanted that "Cinderella Princess" Barbie Doll? And once you received the requested gift, you played with it for a few moments, and then put it on display with all the other Barbies, to collect dust and never, or perhaps rarely, touched again.

Are humans naturally inclined to hunt for A, then once caught hunt B, onwards to hunt C, and onto hunting D and so on and so forth? When does one reach a point of contentment in what one currently possesses? Why must we always struggle for more, more and yet for more? I do not place emphasis on material possession here now (although it is certainly relevant in any bourgeois capitalist society), I instead stress the continued need for the search for emotional or spiritual fulfillment. When is one ever truly complete? Is it even possible?

Are humans behaviorally conditioned to want what they cannot have? And if they do manage to attain what they wanted, is the loss of interest in it not much more than a given?
