So NYC is basically infested with roaches. It's impossible to get rid of them and it's rare than any house or business doesn't have them. It's just a fact.

The coffee shop I work at has roaches and it's distressing because they're not in some hidden area where customers will never see them. It's not a secret than be kept hidden. These roaches run balls out across the counter and up the walls.

Never before have roaches bothered me until working in this place. I've had them at other jobs and homes but never have I had to deal with the worry of customers seeing them and freaking out. Fortunately the only incident so far where a customer has seen one was a guy whose a bit of a regular and had enough courtesy not to freak out or bring it to any of the other customers attention. He simply grabbed his napkin and killed it for me.

I worry though that there will be a day when I'm working and a snobby girl will come in and scream or do something dramatic. I do not want to be the person to deal with that.

The worst experience I've run into with roaches actually happened more to my friend than me. We were eating at this wooonderful mexican restaurant in my neighborhood. We had recently discovered it and were delighted in our find. The food was excellent and was beautiful in it's presentation. It's the type of stuff you'd see in some cooking magazine or cookbook. Anyways, as we were eating I noticed a roach crawl across our table towards my friend and then just as I was about to quietly point it out it crawled onto his hand! Eek. I guess that wouldn't be such a big deal for a guy but to me it wasn't pleasant. I don't mind seeing them or killing them but having one crawl on me is a different story.

He was disturbed to say the least and wasn't sure that he'd be able to return to both our dissapointment. I on the other hand wouldn't mind going back. Roaches are everywhere and the only food they get is the crums that fall on the floor. Restaurants are so obsessed with the threat of roaches and mice that they seal that shit up good.
