Yesterday was a great day. It didn't start out that way, though. We agreed to help our friend, artist Karen Pike set up her booth at the San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival. The morning was hectic because A. We had to get up way early, and B. It was RAINING. We had to move these giant felt-covered walls, set them up, hinge them together, drill holes in the walls, hang the art in a way that looks good. Correction: I had to do all that stuff. As the only male there, I did all the heavy lifting and manual labor while the ladies arranged and directed. It worked out great, though.

Once the display was set up, I was free to get drunk and sample food. Free being the important word there; since I helped set up I just went and grabbed a glass and they gave me a bracelet. Those two things granted my friend Fred and I access to this event. Basically a LOT of wineries and San Diego restaurants set up booths and offered free samples of their fare. I tasted at least 30 different red wines (and one port, at the end, when I shouldn't have) as well as some awesome food samples. Gourmet sausages, seared ahi, sesame-seed crusted seabass, lotsa pastas, different cheeses and spreads. All free. It was a blast.

Of course at the end of the day everything had to be taken down. The U-haul she rented was only available for an hour (!) in the morning and we could not secure another one. So as it is getting dark (and long after dark) we basically crammed into our Pathfinder and her Corolla these walls and about thirty paintings, all of which are semi-fragile and extremely valuable (both sentimenally and financially). But that's ok, I was happy-drunk. It all worked out.

She sold a bunch of paintings, one of my favorites:

to a woman who I think is a relative of the Andrettis (I think it's the racing team and they also own a winery). Great painting, the woman seems to have so much power and confidence.

She may even give us a painting for helping her out so much; there is one that Mani loves that Karen painted (or at least started) here at our house. I'll update if we get it.
