Here we are, xmas eve...

I'm in Cali visiting with family. Recently I posted that I was going to Vegas to see my sick grandma... Now I'm in San Jose seeing my sick grandpa. They're both really old: Grandma (Mom's Mom) is 93, and Grandpa (Dad's Dad) is 95. So, saying they're sick isn't as accurate as saying they're both really old. But it's nice to see them.

I'm also seeing my uncle, my Dad, my stepmom, my two brothers, and my bros' wives. Which is plenty badass, except for the fact that we're all pretty dysfunctional. Well, mostly my family is dysfunctional, but I would be lax if I said that it's all them and none of me. I got in yesterday, and before this morning came, there was already some random, crazy family drama. But nothing we can't handle. smile

I've noticed that my favorite holiday movies are about dysfunction and the concept that holidays make people depressed. Ever seen Mixed Nuts? If you haven't, I highly recommend it: It stars Steve Martin as a suicide hotline counselor. And it's about xmas in L.A. I won't say more, or it will give stuff away... But I will mention that Gary Shandling is in it, and his character's name is Tenenbaum (German for xmas tree.) And it's got Adam Sandler before anyone cared about him. (He's so young!)

And I must give it up for The Ref, which has possibly the most dysfunctional family ever filmed in a comedy. (I have to add the caveat "in a comedy," because of movies like Devil's Rejects or The Hills Have Eyes.) Kevin Spacey as the sniping dad! Denis Leary before he started dressing like a Hollywood pretty boy!

There's also Home For The Holidays, but technically that's a Thanksgiving movie. But it still features mass family dysfunction, and for that reason will always have a special place in my heart. Plus, it's got Holly Hunter, who always kicks my ass.

Anyway... I hope everyone is having a terrific holiday, with only a modicum of fucked-up drama. Merry Xmas, y'all! biggrin
