I used to hear them blowin' on the radio
I'd listen to the music and I'd go to see the show
It don't mean much to me all the same
Like I'm standin' in a crowd with only myself to blame...
The Wildhearts - "Down On London" (1993)
Happy Halloween there folks!
(I wanted to use a pumpkin emoticon here but unfortunately there doesn't appear to be one
)
So...erm, interesting weekend then. Friday was spent watching the '80s Matchbox B-Line Disaster play an absolute stormer of a gig at the Cockpit. Even better was finding out come showtime that one of my fave new bands, Winnebago Deal (extremely rabid-sounding thrash punk duo), were supporting unbeknown to me (they absolutely detonated the gaff natch) and I managed to snap up a copy of their new album from their stall for a tenner. It's called "Dead Gone" and, well, rest assured it kicks arse. Buy it if ya see it.
Also strange was seeing my ex-gf at the gig, not least because it's been ages since I last saw her (check my journal entries around late Jan/early Feb time if you really need all the gory details of how that relationship ended
). Even more surprising was that we had a quite cordial conversation, mostly about how good the bands were tonight and others we'd been to see/were going to see. She had her new feller with her but he seems like a nice enough bloke so that's cool (I dunno about everyone else but I find break-ups a lot easier to get over if I know that at least my ex is now with someone who's treating her as well as she deserves to be treated). It's always good to get a bit of closure on these things - hopefully soon I'll have a new lady to waste my time on...well, there's got to be someone out there surely hasn't there?
Spent the rest of the night out with some mates from work. Much alcohol was drunk and we all behaved like total fools. All good fun.
Spent most of Saturday sorting out my CD collection and took a few to the exchange in Bradford late afternoon which has left me with a couple of new albums and twenty quid or so better off.
Saturday night...errrrm, well that was an interesting one (ahem
). The plan was simple - go to the Halloween bash at Rio's and have some fun. Unfortunately, we got dragged into Revolution by some female friends of ours en route where I decided to prove exactly how goddam hardcore I am by getting a "vodka stick" (six shots of flavoured vodka for a fiver) and necking all of 'em in five minutes which used to be my party trick at Uni. Thereafter the evening is something of a blur - I do remember being quite ecstatically happy when the DJ agreed to my request for him to play "Pretend Best Friend" by Terrorvision, having some very dodgy samosas from a vender outside the club and then being quite violently ill when I got home.
Today has mostly been spent cleaning the house, helping me mam do her garden and listening to nice quiet music that isn't gonna make my hangover even worse - Suede, Electric Soft Parade and Goldrush mostly (the latter of whom I'm off to see at the Royal in Leeds on Thursday
). I think I've now just to say got my composure back so am gonna order a pizza and spend the evening in watching vids ("The Lost Boys" is currently looking favourite
)
Hope everyone had a good weekend, speak to youse all soon.
