Healthy in my dreams
Is what you are
Is what it seems
Banish all the pain
'Cos when I die
I'll see you again
Lush - "When I Die" (1994)
So there was I sat at work not doing much yesterday afternoon when Daz, the other punk kid at our office (a sound bloke even if he is a Geordie
) came wandering over looking shellshocked. I asked him what was wrong. "Take it you've not heard the news then," he said, "John Peel's died."
I spent most of yesterday feeling numb - I don't think the death of someone I don't even know has ever affected me so much, not even when Joe Strummer sadly passed away a couple of years back.
I'll admit, I was too young to witness most of Peely's finest hours - the punk scene of 1977-82 which I've got so many records from I was too young to understand at the time and ditto the '80s indie scene. But I still remember the dark nights during my schooldays tuning in at Radio 1 at 7pm prompt and staying tuned in until the early hours to catch the three DJ's who pretty much shaped my music taste more than any others - Peel, Steve Lamacq and Mark Radcliffe. I was lucky enough to hit 16 with the Britpop boom in full swing and the number of brilliant bands I was introduced to via those three DJ's - Kenickie, the Bluetones, Gene, 3 Colours Red, Silver Sun, China Drum, Embrace and countless others - is something I'll never forget.
RIP Peely, the man may be gone but his legacy will live on.

It's sad about John Peel, someone told me he said he wanted to die behind his desk, would have been cool for him if he had
