How did we get from blue light disco
To crackin' up in San Francisco
Lookin' at myself in a sober light
Well I'm not Elvis but I'm alright
Therapy? - "30 Seconds" (1995)
Doing the midweek update a day earlier than usual as tomorrow I have an urgent financial planning meeting with primate to sort out our business plan for the shop. Wish us luck everybody!!
So...the week so far...now therein lies a story in itself. Today - fairly dull. Yesterday...well, to start with I had chronic insomnia on Sunday night so only got 3 hours sleep and was wandering around work like some sort of "Shaun of the Dead" reject. Finished at 4:30 (took a short lunch), went into Leeds to set up for the second Primitive Promotions gig (oh yeah, picked up the new singles by the Glitterati and McLusky as well which will be getting a spin this evening). Helped the bands set up but didn't get a chance to hear any of 'em play as I was off to the Wildhearts/Therapy? gig at Leeds Met.
Two words for that gig - fucking fantastic. Therapy? were as good as ever despite only being a three-piece now - my only complaint was that practically the whole set bar about two songs was lifted from "Troublegum" and "High Anxiety" - two fantastic albums admittedly but some stuff from the four inbetween them (especially "Suicide Pact") would've been cool as well. Ah well, small complaint.
And the Wildhearts very much rocked also - fifth time I've seen 'em and probably the best yet, the sound seems to have got much much tighter over the last year. Again, a few songs were missed which I would've liked to hear ("Sick of Drugs", "So Into You", "Nita Nitro" and especially "My Baby Is A Headfuck") but they did play "Greetings From Shitsville" for the first time in yonks plus a whole load of other forgotten classics ("Beautiful Thing You", "Girlfriend Clothes") and some great stuff from the new album ("Someone That Won't Let Me Go" especially - how much does that song sum up my life right now?) They also did a furiously fired up version of the "Cheers" theme of all things which rounded off the evening very nicely indeed. Oh and I've got a new Smileybones T-shirt to replace the old one which fell apart as well - photo up here soon I promise.
Only downside was the presence of two living legends on our doorstep hit the PP gig very badly - usually we can count on getting about 40-50 people in to the gigs but I found out from P when I phoned him that we only got 15 in last night meaning we now owe the venue money - first time we've ever pulled in so few punters that that's happened.
I think next time we need to a) book things a bit further in advance or b) check who else is playing nearby before we confirm anything. A real shame as the three bands we had playing last night (Nex, KO Kane and the Pretty Machine, all from Huddersfield) all played an absolute blinder by all accounts and I feel really sorry for 'em that it was largely a wasted trip.
As for work...boring.
But I guess I didn't need to tell you that really, did I?
Hope everyone's having a good week - speak soon at the beginning of the long weekend! Yay!
