Went to inservice today. The school I work at is really.. unique. It's in a particularly run down area of town. Actually a derelict industrial zone, so it has that crowded emptiness to it. In many ways, the typical inner city school. . .
Except. . .
The school only serves 400 kids, despite being housed in a facility originally built to serve 3 times that number. The main reason its still open is because it has a vocal and proud alumni community, due largely to the fact that the school is over 100 years old and is a genuine part of city history.
I sort of dig it, at least so far. Got my classroom today, and spent an hour just looking for the ley lines and figuring out a decent way to organize. It's significantly longer than it is wide (assuming you take the board to be the primary point of focus), so it's difficult to avoid a shotgun setup. Since I'm a ninja-educator-assassin, I was able to do some pretty fucked up -fu and got a setup that I really, really liked. It would fail every test of feng shui, but it very much soothes the nerves of the mildly-OCD. Tomorrow I get to go to target and buy organizing materials (this fills me with a joy uncomprehendable by most).
(What I *really* need is to find a way to make 11x17 or larger posters from a .jpg file. Seriously, this would make my head spin off my shoulders with glee.)
So, monday I get kids. Somewhere around wendesday, I get a contract. Maybe by the labor day I'll know exactly what class i'll be teaching.
OH! And I'm *already* getting screwed by the faceless machine. I should be on the MA + 45hrs pay scale, and I'm only on the MA one. Boo. I've been assured that when things get sorted out, I'll get paid back to day one. I better, I have *traveling* to do, what with summers off.
