I'm in a mood for spending money. There is a new synth coming out this month that I want to get.

There are good things and bad things about every piece of technology. The main issue I have with this is that it is only a 1 part synth which really sucks. It's not multi-timbral. But it's still cool.

I currently own the following:

Acces Virus

Yamaha Motif Rack ES

Novation KS Rack

Novation X-Station

The Ultranova will pretty much replace the X-Station. My brother will get that from me. He's doing alright - I have given him so much second hand shit for free! The X-Station will be good for his setup, because it's got a built in soundcard, and my brother now mostly uses a laptop, which has a useless soundcard with pretty high latency. You can get the X-Station down reasonably low.

The synth engine on the Ultranova is a bit more powerful than the X-Station (which is only one part as well). The Ultranova has 2 Filters instead of one, it's got 3 x oscillators + 2 x ring mod + 1 x noise generator. It's also got a vocoder and an annoying detachable gooseneck mic that I'll never use.

I mostly think that the Ultranova has a better control layout. Although it's got less knobs, it supports Automap, which can do some cool auto mapping shit with soft synths, and the large LCD screens are awesome.

Also, It's got a software editor that runs on Mac or PC, kind of like the Virus TI does.

It's never gonna touch the power of my Virus... but I like Novation hardware for controllers, and it's nice and portable and can be totally powered by USB if you want... ideal for a laptop setup.

I can't buy the fucker though. It's not available here yet. So all I can is ramble about it on my SG blog that nobody reads (except me in maybe 6 months time) until it's finally released and I go and buy it from the music store down the road.

I am like a child when it comes to my toys. Plus, I haven't brought anything new to tinker with for a while, so I am a bit excited.

If only I could afford to quit qork again and stay at home every day to play with my toys...
