you felt soft, like snow
your feathers so light
and like a tiny sun
your body's warmth ebbing away...
you spoke to me
i spoke to you
the dog simply did what doggies do
i should have known
your chirps were so clear
"pain" you said
and "panic"
but i looked in the ivy
and up in the bush
while the dog - she knew better
so swiftly she lunged
i saw - and heard "NO!"
i said it
she leapt back
but you were slightly wet
you shook
the entirety of your delicate body in shock
i felt it, little one
and then you were gone
i held you
do you know that i held you?
i held you until the hole was dug
i laid you inside
"i'm sorry," i said
as i sprinkled the earth over you
i tried to think "she will take care of you"
but i don't know
i'm sorry your sun has gone out
i'm sorry i've buried your snow
had i not walked there
had we not spoken...
i am sorry
i do not think it was your time to go
your feathers so light
and like a tiny sun
your body's warmth ebbing away...
you spoke to me
