instead of a pathetic journal entry, here are twenty semi-interesting things about abra -- at least more interesting than the miserable drivel i've been writing lately.
1. i love the movie Harold and Maude. i watch it whenever i'm feeling down. i have probably seen it more than 20 times, but only once at a theater.
2. because of number 1, i have always been fascinated by the actor bud cort. when i was going to college in southern california, my roommate and i tried to find his house in silverlake. we never did.
3. i stopped eating red meat 15 years ago, was a vegan for a couple years, and am now an occasional fish-eating vegetarian. however, i do harbor a secret love for spam. i know it's disgusting, but i really like it. it must remind me of my childhood.
4. when i was a waitress at a truck stop one summer, i found $600 cash in an unmarked envelope under a table. i turned it in, and the owners gave it to the waitress whose section it was in (not mine). she kept $200 and gave me $400, which i used to take a trip to block island, rhode island, to see a boy. i drove to reno, flew to boston where i stayed a nigth at a hostel, then took a train and a bus to point judith, only to find that the ferry wasn't running because of a hurricane watch. so i befriended some locals and slept that night on the floor of a ship captain's house and took the ferry the next day. it was a fun trip, though things with the boy didn't work out.
5. i have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, panic disorder, borderline personality disorder, social anxiety disorder, and major depression.
6. i spent a year in oxford, england.
7. before i got involved with suicidegirls, i was so self-conscious that i would undress in the closet because i hated seeing myself naked.
8. i am very interested in vodou and want to visit haiti someday.
9. i went to a small women's college in southern california.
10. i like to knit while watching "law & order." i have a big schoolgirl crush on the late jerry orbach. seriously, it's ridiculous. i was devastated when he died.
11. i chose the name abra because i was reading East of Eden when my first set was shot.
12. i like children and animals more than adults. if i pass a dog on the street, i am compelled to stop and love all over it. if i'm in a grocery store and see a baby, i make stupid faces at it until i can make it smile.
13. i obsessively dote on my dog, lucy, who bares her teeth in a sort of grimace/smile when she's really excited.
14. i moved 11 times in less than two years.
15. when i want to change my life and i can't move, i dye my hair, usually shades of red, brown, pink, or black. i was blonde for a week; it looked silly but i got a lot more attention than i do as a brunette.
16. when i drink too much, sometimes i get really sad. sometimes i get really belligerent and try to pick fights with my friends. often i run away, even if i'm wearing heels.
17. i grew up in a house surrounded by the woods, and as a kid i loved to climb trees. my childhood ambition was to be a professional tree climber or, if that didn't work out, a writer.
18. my nose has been broken 3 times.
19. i was born on valentine's day, so i have always hated hearts, cupids, pink, roses, and anything that had to do with that sickly sweet holiday. now, however, i adore the color pink and i have started collecting heart-shaped things. incidentally, both of my tattoos are versions of hearts: the sacred heart of mary on my chest, the heart-shaped veve of erzuli freda on my neck. but i still don't like valentine's day.
20. i had a near-fatal accident in october of 2002. i was in the intensive care unit for several days and lost thirty pounds. i still have a tiny scar on my neck from the hemodialysis.
