Finally saw Avatar, and despite what self proclaimed critics say, I loved it. It was truly amazing in it's scope and depth. Now granted the story is nothing new, it is a story that has been told many times, as are most stories these days, but the genius of Avatar was in the pacing, which for three hours didn't really stop. There was the perfect balance of highs and lows throughout. Hands down some of the best CG and practical effects that I have seen in film, I was truly amazed at the level of detail in the characters and particularly the machinery. Facial expressions and overall character movement was the closest to reality...and I was left speechless. Was it the best story....no, was it the best acting...not really....was it an amazing ride and overall enjoyable movie....YES. I love big dumb fun but this was not dumb...BIG yes, and one thing in particular that struck me was the scale in the movie. From the humans, to machines, forest, trees....etc I couldn't believe the scale involved and how real it seemed. It seemed to me like one of the first films where the scale seemed truly accurate. I love the Lord of the Rings films, some of my favorites, but even in there scaling seemed and issue and the matte paintings lent a great overall effect but in Avatar, everything seemed so REAL and practical I couldn't believe it. Anyways....I enjoyed it and highly recommend to a film fan, sci-fi buff or just looking for the next evolutionary step in cinema. The 3d was hands down the best yet, but 3d still has a long way to go and I think it may be just a fad in the amount of films that are coming out in 3d. But this really set the bar to a whole new level. smile
