Just back from good ol' Mississippi... turns out I didnt have to test run the new power system. That was fine with me since we couldnt get things to sync beforehand, and I really hate messing with things that'll bring the house down during live broadcast TV. I still get paid and that's the best part really.
Freelance film can generally be defined as "dont make plans on being social". I get phonecalls like this all the time, matter of fact, just 10 mins ago:
Gaffer: "Hey, I need you to put together a package so we can travel to location and film the next two days. You'll be Key Grip and we'll leave tomorrow. I'll need a couple 1200's, a Joker kit, 2ft and 4ft kinos daylight lamped, flags, cutters, gels, diffusion, and throw in any grip equipment you'll need."
Me: "Where are we shooting?"
Gaffer: "Dont know."
Me: "What are we shooting?"
Gaffer: "Dont know."
Me: "Excellent. See you tomorrow at 5."
