The quandary of the moment: I didnt enjoy Land of the Dead, more so, my problem with this is the majority of people I know are digging it, so what gives?
Hypothesis: Im a jerk. A zombie-elitist jerk.
I cringed every moment that computerized after-effect blood splashed from zombie head wounds. Not the type of cringe I got from previous Romero masterpieces, oh no, these were much different. 3 years Ive hyped of this moment, to anyone from family, co-workers, old ladies, anyone whod listen I was just that excited. Thus the inevitable letdown was causing such cringes, embarrassment cringes.
Its a classic example of bad storytelling to have to explain the actions/details of the movie within the movie itself but the ground flowers had already been explained within the first 10 minutes of the movie so why not come up with an excuse for such an obvious negligence when it comes to the FX dept. say anything, you know, the a stenches blood is so thick from coagulating, thats why it looks so odd when you shoot them Id at least respect that as an excuse or an bad decision as to why the blood was computerized. Did Romero go home and sleep at night after this? After grueling zombie makeup/effects shoots spanning from the late 60s to the mid 80s, can he honestly say thats a wrap, sent it to the computer dept. to add all the gore and be done?
Im not just pissy about the gore mind you, I have a lot more to add to the list, from the elementary social commentary worn on the sleeve, ridiculous master-zombie plot, john woos powder burn 101 and the un-Romero ending. There is a lot to be taken into account as to why this movie isnt good.
Goddamnit, how can my own brother love this movie!?!?! How can everyone love it but me? I was the one waiting for it. I was the one who read the screen play, even if it sucked from start to finish. I was the one who saw the 11:59 the night before its release all by my lonely ass self. I was the one that tried to like it so much I went and saw it again, and still only liked the look out! scene with Dennis Hopper and the YOU GOT FUCKED! guy who ultimately was talking to me.
Dang, Im a loser, a zombie-elitist loser/jerk.
