i went into management because:

a. alot of days...if i book a job i get anywhere from 6 to 14 days or more at a good rate.

b. those days are mostly offfice days, usually shoots are 2 to 4 days tops. i like the office. its a controlled enviorment. ac, broadband internet, and everyone i work with is generally friends of mine.
we hire eachother.

c. im in control of the enviorment for the shoot days. well, not entirely, but i can create conditions and accomodations for myself to make those days as comftorable for me.

d. if ive done my job well im bored on the shoot days. making music videos, is an inherently difficult job for most of the crafts. long days, alot of rigging, alot of building, alot of dressing, alot of lighting, its 14 hours or more a day of back breaking work. if we are shooting exteriors on a hot day and you can imagine how much it sucks.
i stay in an air conditioned motorhome, watching sattelite tv.

e. every job is different, and you know it will end.
you work for different companies, always see different people, though the details of my job can get boring, if im annoyed by anything, i know it will be over at some point...but thats just a perk of freelance.

f. we control the money.

g. skies the limit. you move up, and up and up. the idea is to end up producing, and then either move into features, or get a nice executive producer desk job with a nice yearly salary. and though im not talking about paint covered hands, sweat and sculpture, tortured creativity, you still have a hand in a creative process, were, you dont have to really take responsible for the content, (unless its good) and it pays well. i call this the bob evans dangeling carrot. see, we dont get benefits, or insurance....we get the dream (like the one i had playing every cool bar in the US in the ninties) that if we keep going we will have the house on the hill.
ive always worked better with a dream. you put a cap on my life, and i die.

why do you do what you do?
