yes. he was a doc. it's the staff of Asclepius and it "symbolizes the healing arts by combining the serpent, which in shedding its skin is a symbol of rebirth and fertility, with the staff, a symbol of authority, befitting the god of Medicine."

I was also born in the year of the snake, so that works out nicely too.
