If you're strong enough, I'd say the best thing for everyone is to keep the dog, show it extra love, but also be extra firm. Rotties can and will challenge for dominance ... over and over again if they've been abused. Shame that it happened to your mom, but that's not altogether unexpected either if she isn't someone who is around as often as those the dog clearly knows are dominant.
I'd just hate to see a good dog punished for doing what comes naturally to him. :-\ But at the same time, I know you have to do what you have to do for yourself, too.

This is horrible news sweetie. sometimes we just don't want to accept the animals do snap, not only dogs but any animal. I had a cat that I love but almost stab to death after she attacked my stepson and sent him to the hospital with his whole body scratched up and inner thigh bitten. now I have pythons and a beautiful PIt bull. Which you'll be surprise but he's way better than the cat. Anyways! i hope your mom got better from the injures. I love dogs and i trained mines really well. Hope something works out for you sweetie!
