Well, Eric Clapton (who ought to know) says that staying sober day to day is more important than his music or his family, because if he's not sober he loses them and everything else. He just focuses on the moment he's living in and staying clean in that moment, and then he moves on to the next.

He's got a lot to say on the subject in his autobiography ("Clapton", it's called).
