It's 8PM and I'm just getting home from work. That's 2.5 hours overtime, sure, but it's still late. It's not really an issue though, as Monday nights are usually pretty low-key for me. My only concern is that I've got to wash some things for tomorrow - all the work shirts are dirty - and I don't know that there's enough money on my stupit laundry card to do a load which means that, while I'd normally go grab some cash from the ATM, I'm gonna have to hand wash something as I've not received my ATM card for my new bank account.
Hrmpf.

On a related note, Sunday night was Target Night, so I made the venture in the rain to pick up some goods ... Upon arriving, I approach the customer service counter and ask them to make sure I can write a check (see above paragraph.) "Well you should be fine..."

"Could you verify the check for me to make sure you'll take it, so that when I spend an hour shopping I don't get up to the cashier to find out there's something wrong?"

"Oh, sure well let me see it real quick... they don't really ever have to check them though-Oh yes you'll be ok"

"Great - thank you!"
(paraphrased)

My hour was wasted. There seems to be a company that keeps tabs on your checking accounts, and when a store or the like subscribes to this service, they report the state (good standing or overdrawn) and amount in the accounts linked to you. According to policy, Target is unable to accept my check - even if I've never had a check dishonored at any Target store anywhere - if I have another account overdrawn.

I hate that there's no one to battle against anymore - no one to appeal to - there's only Policies and Guidelines and Company Mandates. I've hated it on both sides of the position, as I've been the one who's job was at stake for not abiding by the Policies / Guidelines / Mandates even when I knew that it was stupit to do so. You have to... Even if you know that no harm or bad will come of slipping one person by this time, 'cause if you don't, you'll be reprimanded, and if you do it continuously, you're eventually going to be out of a job. I don't blame the people, really, and I do my best to not get mad at them. What can you do though? Often I feel so powerless as an individual.

"You have no rights. You're a citizen, not a Corporation."

Do you ever feel like some place only exists to part you with your money? Don't we pay for the work and service and materials in things any more? When did we decide it was acceptable to have a value placed on us by a company? Wasn't the end design in Fight Club to destroy the credit centers?

I hate that I was almost too afraid - due to the state my government has reached - to write that I wish I could bomb the credit centers myself. Don't get me wrong in that, however, I wish no loss of life, only institution. On second thought, the buildings can stand, for that matter; destroy the nerve centers, the data of the institution. That's the core, the true soul of the machine. Buildings are the Hydra's head... There's nothing there. Poisoning the data is the only way.

Meanwhile, back in reality: the further I'm removed from handling actual cash it seems I get in more and more trouble. I find it odd that there is no universal form of payment any longer: some places are cash only, some won't take cash, some will only accept checks or money orders or other "bearer instruments." I don't trust money. I hate having to deal with it. What can you do though?
