I doubt it'll be possible to dump him without hurting his feelings. I recommend directness, although it's hard to do. Just tell him there isn't room in your life for him, or words to that effect. I'd rather be told that bluntly than try to figure out if someone is "trying to tell me something." The problem with subtlety is that its easy to misinterpret, especially if there's one interpretation you really prefer (or one you really don't want to see)...

I think I've managed to get rid of him by not e-mailing, calling or seeking him out. He IMed me last night, and we talked for a while. I'd like to remain friends. However, from my experience, that doesn't usually work out very well.
My birthday today. Yesterday sucked. The only thing I was looking forward to (having lunch with my mom) got canceled because it's fucking freezing here.
