I am not, however, going to graduate school for Political Science. On Monday, I get my Bacherlor's degrees in History and Philosophy. I am applying for Ph. D. programs in History (Russian) at most schools, except at UT Austin, where I am applying for a Master's program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian studies. Chicago seems like a good choice for me because Sheila Fitzpatrick is currently there and I believe that Cornell's Peter Holquist is accepting a position there as well.

Don't get me wrong. I loved the neighborhood, and never felt unsafe there... just that the frequent attack upadates the paper was running were starting to get to my psychologically.
Just moved up to Ravenswood - love the area, and the overall feel is similiar to HP - just more convenient to the rest of the city.

Take a look at my old neighborhood, Logan Square. It's on the blue line and you could still get to U of C in a reasonable amount of time. I lived in the city all of my life so feel free to ask me any neighborhood questions if you're seriously moving.

I love infrastructure (one of my best friend's is a traffic engineer); I'm fascinated my traffic, airports, all those things. I'm currently (okay, maybe not at this exact moment), writing a conference paper on outlet shopping "supercentres" and how they can be read in terms of Western diet discourse.

I didn't mean to imply that it was ugly or anything, it's just that US 1 goes through the damned thing, so you can't have that wonderful spatial dynamic afforded in the manner of Berkeley. And it hasn't developed in the same way Berkeley has. Everything around CP is mostly a chain store or restaurant, I believe.

Yeah we read Lynch and Jacobs too. I'm thinking about how diet foods are in a category of so-called "safe foods" that give the okay for women to consume, and consume in quantity--which, in general--is frowned upon. I'm pretty much applying that logic to outlet centres where I exchange cals/carbs/fats for price.
'Course what I'm really thinking about it fuck, that's due really fucking soon. I should get on that. Well that and Canada's largest outlet centre/supercentre was build about 5 minutes from where my parents live, so it's an issue that's very close to home.

In response to the grocery shopping-- I agree that if you must go, it is best to do so as late at night as possible. Or on Friday night, when people with lives aren't out getting groceries. I also discovered awhile back that it's much better for my marriage if he and I never set foot in a grocery store together again.
