I'm a chemist. Specifically physical organic chemistry, if I can find a school with a professor who's doing the kinds of work I'm interested in. If I can't find one in the Boston area, I will be fairly disappointed! (Not likely to be a problem, though.)

Currently, though, I have my analytical hat on and am playing an anal chemist for small pharma. It's rewarding in its own way, and I love the company, I just hate what I'm doing.

The other day, I was talking to E, and he was telling me how he was going to the symphony. I've never been, and he was telling me how really cool it is - even if you're not a big classical fan (E's favorite band is The Talking Heads, and not Mozart). As part of the conversation, he noted that he just feels like he's...

There are lots of things I don't know how to fully appreciate: wine, jazz, classical music, art, and coffee just to name a few. I don't have a *grudge* against any of these things, and I *enjoy* many of them. I can distinguish *some* differences between "good" and "bad" in these areas, but only with the broadest brush strokes. Hence, I am also fully aware...

You should try watching rugby; it's got everything American football has, and it flows better. I will see if I can dig up a video that's worth watching.

So, apparently "getting a job" is the new theme of this journal.

The other day I realized: I need to get out of graduate school. I mean, I was already planning for next year to be my last year. But it sort of struck me the other day. I can't tolerate other graduate students anymore.

Don't get me wrong: all of my colleagues are really...

Well, yes, you will graduate. But, let's pretend you are in English. 80% of graduates to not get a TT job. Which translates to things like crap adjuncting, PT jobs with no benefits (the best you can hope for is that you don't have to work at 4 different places).

And yes, there aren't really clothes in Hyde Park/Cottage Gove. And yes that semi-secret bus is awesome (the CTA site never seems to recommend it).

Thanks for the comment smile

Maybe it's just me, but is there a serious sex industry in Providence, RI or what? I think I ran across three strip clubs and two adult video stores just, you know, out walking around and shit. Apparently, New England makes you really horny.

But really, Providence is a cute place. Kind of fun, with Brown there and lots going on. The capital building is...

Sounds as if you should take the opportunity to send some job applications, see what happens. Feedback is always useful.

I dunno if you know, but I live in RI. I've heard that RI was the strip club capital of the US, but I've never seen a damn strip club. Granted, I've only lived here since November (officially anyway) and I live about as far away from Providence as possible (south shore). But I've always wondered about why people said that. I guess Providence is where it's at (I actually went there for only the second time since I've been here last night, and I was only a block or two away from Brown, but I didn't see any strip clubs).

As far as the traffic goes, I think people are on the edge. There's been some major highway construction and re-routes in the past few months and it's made many a Rhode Islander unhappy especially around Providence (from what I've heard on the radio anyway--I usually bypass all that on the way to my grandfathers).

I really wish I had known you were going to be up this direction, we could have hung out.

As per the money thing, yeah, I'm trying to figure that out myself.

Take care, hope all is well.

I feel like I have about a million things to do today, and tomorrow I'm on the road. Mostly, it's things that I "want" to get done versus "having" to get done. But it still makes me crazy.

That's a distinction without a difference, to me. It's all anxiety producing.

I had a pretty glorious weekend of not doing too much at all. I mean, sure, I banged out some work and so on. But mostly, there was *relaxing.* It was the calm before the storm: the wife starts her finals prep this week. I travel this weekend and at the end of May, and I have a workshop presentation at the end of May....

I'm working from today, because I bought an external wireless hard drive (re: a "Time Capsule") to back up my hard drive on. And it's really slow backing up this shit over the wireless network. But I'm glad I'm doing it. I was doing some data work the other day, really repetitive and slow grinding that is crucial to my work, and I just had...

True fact: I do not like exercise *or* the outside. That said, I'm really jonesing for May, and when my wife is done with school for the year. When that happens, we'll start trying to get out and job in the AM a few times a week. (When she's in school - it's just too hard. She has to report for class by 8:30 in...

It's 8:30 Friday morning, I'm cooking chutney, and getting myself together to go downtown for a conference.

All right.
sockpuppet:
You make your own chutney? Sweet smile
sockpuppet:
Ah. Probably not to my taste, sadly; I am not a fan of very sweet stuff, in general.
But, kudos to you for making it anyway smile
