my uncle (who died when he was like 4) is still at my gma's and gpop's house. i never knew him since he died so young...but i talk to him every now and then when i'm there. i think that your feelings about your gdad still being there are watching over your gma are probably right. and i'm sure he probably is there cause he knew you were coming as well. don't feel weird...just smile and remember that he is still here...even if he isn't in phyiscal form.
