It used to be automatic for me too, but its not a good thing to learn to live with and is not just part of you. You have to learn to not do it and it will fade out. I don't reccomend letting it continue.

Your post obviously wasn't about materialism. It's about pain. The money thing is just symbolic of how they don't express their love and how they can hurt you in another way without being direct about it. I totally understand this. I have weird money/power/control/emotional issues with my mother as well. I know that the whole world "gets" from her, but not me. It's just another way she likes to make me feel unworthy of love.
I'm thinking of getting a pumpkin today before I goto work. I'm going to cut TUX into it!!!
