it's an inspiron 5160.. and i think i figured it out. there's a guy selling the exact same drive as mine on ebay, and he explains how to remove it.
i just emailed dell about the problem, so i'll see what they say first. if i can avoid having to pay for a replacement, i will. the only thing i'm worried about is having a big, gaping hole in my laptop for a while.
