Perhaps try giving your roommate small achievable tasks, and letting him know how an untidy flat makes you feel. Or maybe when you set aside a day get him to join in. Definately when you go away leave a list of "things that must be done to avoid an arsekicking".
Or perhaps just wire him up to an electric shock machine, so everytime he makes something untidy, *BzzT*. He'll thank you in the long run.
