Should the First Lady be paid? Consider the signals we send with the unpaid role of first hostess?
This is 2009 not 1959.
It's not about the money it's about respecting and valuing those who perform this very crucial and difficult role.
It seems to me that the First Lady is taken for granted by more men (and women) than anyone else on the planet.

I don't know. If the First Lady just didn't do anything, would there be consequences? I'm not sure that it's a job. It's a position that comes with expectations, but are those the same as obligations? If the expectations aren't met, what happens?
That is to say that the work done by First Ladies in the past probably does deserve pay, but this means that that very work becomes an obligation and we are now voting for couples instead of an individual.
And what happens if a single person is elected?
(And on the note that the First Lady can't realistically keep another job - how come President Barlett's wife was still a doctor? Maybe the problems shared by our First Ladies would be solved if they tried being fictional?)
