It sucks to hear stories about how others put in so much work for their partners, then to get screwed later on down the road. Antique furniture can be VERY expensive. It depends who's putting the price tag on it...the whole "another man's trash..." cliche is true.
I was finding large 1930's furniture at a little run down junk store for 20-40$$.
But I was at another place today that had similiar items for 100-600$$!
Basically, shop around. I'll bet San francisco has some kick-ass antique places. Or, if CA's anything like Ohio, try outskirts of town or more rural areas. They seem not to value their antiques as much for some reason.
