well i dont know if obligated was the right word. i mean i didnt feel that i had to update everyday for anyone elses benefit, i just felt like i was doing it for myself i guess. like i had this outlet and i should utilize it. its kinda selfish too, cuz i just like getting comments from people and you seem to get more the more often you update. i dont know. geez i seem to be saying that alot lately. i just dont know.

like you i have a need for a high degree of autonomy in my work--- usually that means you have to work a whole lot harder than if you were in a 9 to 5 job, but what you lose in agonising dullness and predictable routine, you gain in empowerment, confidence and satisfaction... and dare i say it, fulfilment.

my dream job would certainly be creative--- writing and performing mainly. plus indulging my interests, like travel, music, comedy, that kind of thing.

for that reason i'm quite excited about starting this PhD. For starters, they're paying me, so it's like a job. Secondly, I'll be back in Belfast, which is small enough to 'network' with the right people, and indulge in all my interests. and then for the purposes of my research, i should be able to wrangle a few travel opportunities out of it, which is all good. and by the end of it, even if being an academic wasn't really how i imagined myself, i'll still have developed the skills for what i really want to do (including teaching as performing, i suppose), so I'll be in a much better position to launch myself in that direction when I finish.

our internet's been down for four days and it just came up now. you can use whatever you want of mine. just include my email address somewhere on there to make sure people know it's mine. because i like my stuff. =)

hmm... i'd rather not get anything in the mail just because i don't want my girlfriend seeing the word "bad" used in conjunction with my poems. she's a bit protective. but maybe you could like, scan it or something so i can see what you've done. hehe.

That's the worst. I don't have my own dog, but there's a couple in my immeditate family that I'm super close to. I took a bunch of pictures of Poet the last time he was here because I was thinking that I didn't have any.

I was just reading DitNB....the rejection letter reminds me of my old roommate. He's an aspiring writer. We lived together in the dorms. He wallpapered an entire wall of our dormroom with rejection letters from submitting stories to magazines.
