I'm a guy who doesn't know anything about cars, so I'm really helpful. 
These days it means having to take the car to a garage so they can hook it up to a diagnostic computer that will give them a code telling them what specifically the problem is, since it could be, as said above, hundreds of things.
The one thing I'm fairly certain of is that will cost you a lot of money.
