Your points are all valid. We'll have to see what happens. I agree with you on the UN. They're blowing it on Iran.

Hah. I was wondering if you'd see that. Believe it or not, I'm fairly pro-defense and have always felt that a strong military is a necessity in this world. I just don't trust politicians, and they control the money we spend on defense as well as when and where we excercise our force. Iraq is enough for me to never trust anything that comes out of this administration. As much as I'm glad Iraq has held a democratic election, that isn't a justification for lying to the country about the danger that Iraq posed to us and the world. Democracy in Iraq was not the primary reason we went to war, WMD and a clear and present danger as described at length by Rice and others was. I don't believe the ends can justify the means in this case, and I don't think we can trust Bush or Rice when it comes to their statements or public assumptions regarding the middle east.

I don't want a nuke going off in my country, but I also don't want to see an already stretched military trying to engage a 3rd campaign when it hasn't finished with either of the first 2. Give the target data to the Israelis and let them take it to Iran if they really do need to be stopped. The real problem is, it's likely too late to stop Iran. There is too much data to indicate they, at minimum, have enough materials and support to rebuild after a tactical strike and may actually have a secondary nuke program completely concealed. The Iraq war has given them 2 years to basically move ahead with their program largely unimpedded while most international attention has been focused on the more immediate conflict. The cat is out of the bag, and all the models for a war with Iran that I've seen have hi probabilities of sparking secondary conflicts and the possibility of escalating to a regional or larger scale. I'm not saying I have the answer, but I don't think Rice does either.

Maybe they really are thinking diplomatic in this case. wink

Marines are the Navy's infantry. Historically we were stationed aboard ships to keep the Sailors in line and to jump off the ships when we got somewhere and go kill people in foreign lands. Before airplanes we were by far the fastest way for the government to kill someone in a foreign land.

I see the difference like this: Marines are for immediate, shortterm, high-intensity comflicts. The Army is for occupying lands and for longer term conflict.. They take over when we move on.
