I like to approach these things the scientific way. Why are we hear? To procreate and propagate the species. Why are some people built one way intellectually and some others? Genetic blood traits + upbringing + life experience.

I personally have the flying scenario. Not like I'm Superman or anything like that mind you. But like you, it would be a steady, natural progression until the act can be achieved. Like I feel the breeze going though my body, and I can feel the wind gently working it's way around me. I modify my posture to create more resistance, then extend my arms and feel myself being carried by the wind, but not like a hurricane uncontrollably whisks you away to your death, no, this is different, I can actually control myself and where I want to go, kind of like gliding. Then I wake up to realize the disappointment of physics.
It was pretty awesome though.
