Wow, you have lots of suggestions already. But, since you asked, you can read about my neuroscience rotation (or just merely pay the price for putting sarcasm on the interwebs where I can't tell).

I started out in experimental neuroscience research, but my absentmindedness caused an unfortunate number of rats to expire and ended up getting me fired. Thus, I moved on to modeling work.

In my modeling, I used some physiological equations to simulate the responses of neurons to certain chemicals. I was interested in doing some similar work in grad school, but I wanted to know more about how the physiology was done. Basically, I could understand the results of the physiology papers, but was unable to critique them. Pitt has a program which allows students interested in Neuroscience research to spend a year or two doing interdisciplinary work. Thus, I started talking to some of the physiologists about the possibility of doing some work in their labs with that program.

It turned out that one lab was actually looking for someone with good mathematical skills for a project he just got funded. It involves analyzing the structure and function of NMDA receptors. Through various means, I ended up doing a full fledged rotation with this lab and may end up being co-advised by him. So, generally, I am rather excited about the whole deal.

Damn, I was going to suggest neuroscience rotation.
