I can't say I really play anything. I have a keyboard, a piano, a guitar, and mini-djembe, and I play with all of them, but don't play any well enough to play the music I have written on them. I used to be able to play one song I wrote on the piano (the only one that's pop-ish and written purely for love and lust reasons. It's called "With Shannon" and it got me a girlfriend).
I can play ideas from others, but not he entire pieces. Many ideas I just hear in my head. I sing others (voice is my instrument). I've written many musical theatre-type tunes that have never been performed. I've also written classical-type pieces (one cool guitar & flute duet, one a cappella trio, and stuff I was required to compose in school but actually enjoyed doing). I have one vocal-jazz arrangement to my credit.
I write starting with some idea on piano or voice, jotted down on whatever paper is handy. I pop it into my computer and arrange it on Finale. I am a total cheater when if comes to composition.
