I am mad because Boca Juniors were eliminated last night in Brazil but I am pumped up because of the Euro 2008 competition, and I hope that Holland wins playing beautiful futbol. and I also hope that Italy loses in the first round. But how are you? your health? A big hug to you!
So, I've been ill for the past couple weeks, which is kept me from posting as regularly as I might. However, one of the good things to come out of all this is that I discovered Nuance's Dragonsoft program, which is a speech recognition program that allows me to dictate my copy right into a word processor. This means I can prop my Mac up... Read More
There is no doubt in my mind that Dundee United will play one of their best games of the season against Celtic. Some say they have nothing to play for, but those people are wrong and don't know the club or their manager.
They are playing for a sense of justice and trying to right some wrongs and I expect them to come out guns blazing making Celtic play at their highest level for some time in order to raise the third league title in a row and cementing surely one of the best comebacks in Scottish history.
St. Mirren held Rangers to a 3-0 win, which means Celtic are +4 going into Thursday's game. To me that means if Celtic win, the title is theirs since I would be SHOCKED if Aberdeen let in five goals when they have a chance of securing more cash in the final league standings and play spoiler to their greatest enemy.
With the recent passing of Tommy Burns, I think the team will be overcome with emotion in this game and hopefully they will lift the trophy in his memory. Do it for Tommy should be the motto, just as Motherwell did it for O'Donnell by sealing UEFA Cup qualification and honoring his memory.
You know Celtic has stumbled and effectively given Rangers two league titles since the SPL's inception. Now should be the time Celtic clinches it on the last day.
What a finish to the season though.
By the way, it seems the Celtic/Motherwell charity game could be a sell out. Another great story for Scottish football.
I do hope Dundee United plays Mack the Knife over the tannoy in Burns' honor like some of the other clubs did over the weekend. It should be a good match and I pray a fair one for ours and for the Rangers game as well.
Still no time for book reviews. But, I have an excuse: I've been sick. Nothing major, just ugh. I had to jump back into things for work (see fox.com/sports) but next week I'll tell y'all about what I've been reading. Some of it has been good.
I would love to say I'm shocked and surprised by what took place today but I'm not.
Regardless to whether people believe or do not believe in the new terminology of "Celtic paranoia" (which of course is said to dismiss and downplay actual grievances of which there are a plethora of cases to point out in which actual bias is proven), there is also another side to this whole thing assuming there is no bias.
That side being that the officials in the SPL are piss poor.
You know personally because you write about and follow games in CONCACAF region and know that they also have notoriously bad officials, but I have yet to see things as bad as what seems to go on in the SPL on a semi-regular basis without referees suffering any consequences.
Rangers fans always blame "paranoia", or say "it will always even out" or "that's just the way it goes" but that's not going to help Dundee United win a UEFA Cup spot now is it?
So saying there wasn't any actual underhandedness (many of course believe there was) McCurry should clearly be reviewed and taken off SPL matches. There is a difference between one fuck up, and missing a penalty, a head butt, a punch to the face, an clearly onside goal all in one game.
Not to mention its ONE game out of many this year where he has been appalling.
But of course, I expect the SPL to do nothing and maybe the Laptop Loyal will try to downplay how absolutely horrific and unexplainable that entire game was in the media in the next week to come.
I have never seen a manager react like Levein did tonight, and it will be interesting to see what the fallout will be.
I can only hope they blow the Cup final and the League for some sense of justice.
I have finished watching the firsts season of Dr Who now!
I am so totally in love with it! (Both the series and Dr Who as played by Christopher Ecclestone, developing a mayor crush...)
First, go read this. It's brilliant.
Next, if you wish, you can read my stuff every other day at www.jamietrecker.com or on the front page of Fox Sports. Be warned: I write about soccer (there); my other stuff is, well, elsewhere.
STUFF I AM READING:
Hoo boy. Been kinda junking out lately; my pal Claire and I have been trading back the Dark Horse... Read More
I left you a comment yesterday, but I cant see it here...weird sg with all the disappearing posts...
I dont remeember quite what it said, but right now what Im thinking is that its unusual that youre so into sports and we seem to get along well
Still, you have to be somewhat into something to work with it.
Then again, Im not into wiping old peoples butts, but Ive been paying my rent by it.
I guess I might have proven myself wrong now...
Oh yay! I think I have to watch the series again to decide what I really think about them...
But well, I loved the Xindi though. They really remind me somehow of the different creatures you can play in this game.
yeah, exactly - there's a client you install, or use one of the third-party "scrobblers" that's out there. it's really a very cool way to see what your friends are into recently, and share stuff with people.
Honestly, I wonder if its a genetic characteristic or ability to learn sometimes because my Grandfather has that same trait where he will read 5 or 6 at a time like I do. Really, I have so many interests I like to go after them all at the same time I guess. I can always keep track of them all, so there isn't really a downside to the way I read now.
Out of curiosity, do you know the specifics between the USA games and the reason why they've been taken off ESPN for the most part and played on Fox?
Did US soccer make a TV deal with FSC or something? Because, I've not found much information on why this happened. The result is of course that it restricts the number viewers of the USA team making the switch to a non-standard channel.
As we know from Hockey's struggle...ESPN is the key to acceptance, and only the Mexico games seem to make it on there recently. Although i see they may broadcast the Ingerlund game on classic.
I may still go to the Euros, I'm currently finishing my uni degree and will be done over the summer and I wanted one last long trip abroad before jumping into real life. The problem is that when it comes down to it, I'd rather see Celtic than the Euros, and I'll be able to see Croatian League games and some other UK matches when I'm abroad in August after the tournament.
2010 sounds like it will be interesting. At this point I may be going with one of my buddies who grew up playing ODP with Dempsey and EJ, because I'm not sure how many other people I know will go. Is it still an actual possibility they move it or is it mainly talk?
China's having severe problems with the Olympics but that will still be going ahead, I wonder if FIFA are waiting to see how that pans out before gambling on South Africa being ready in 2 years.
I haven't been around as much as usual due to a poisonous combination of illness and other, unrelated woes. I'm fine, thanks for asking. Now we return you to our regularly scheduled service:
THE INVENTION OF MOREL (Adolfo Bioy Casares): Weird coincidence: I ordered this book from Amazon after finding out NYRB had re-issued it _ it was the source material... Read More
Thanks so much for commenting on my blog - I think you're right 100%. I guess when I put them up I didn't necessarily realize that they would: 1) go all up at once and 2) be all so public. I'm used to just putting stuff up on my own page and it was really crazy/overwhelming seeing everything up on the front page. HOWEVER - I'm glad that you gave me the heads up, for real.
POOR PEOPLE: William Vollman
RIDING TOWARDS EVERYWHERE (see above) - OK, so on the strength of a so-so NYT Book Review notice (which was, as it turns out, quite prescient and accurate) I picked up both of the "newer" Vollman books. The last thing I had read by Vollman was the "Royal Family," which, in truly bizarre fashion, I made beach reading... Read More
