uhg. i've had a busy week. went to see AvW and some other bands at the Dixie on Saturday. (pictures are up, in some folder or another) and yesterday i got drug out to the levee for a friend's going away BBQ, after i'd pledged to "take it easy" on Sunday. added to all the crap i posted last entry, and on top of it...

No worries on the response. I've had them get away from me a couple of times. Very frustrating after you've actually taken the time to offer a complete thought. Glad to know you made a go of it, though.

I, too, was pulled from my semi-self-imposed house arrest. A friend managed to wrangle some Cubs tickets for Friday afternoon. I'm generally blah about sports in general, but I love going to Wrigley Field. Sunday saw me attend my first wedding ever. Aside from the fact that I was wearing a suit in 95 degree heat and 80% humidity (not that I'd have the audacity to complain about heat and humidity to someone in La), it was pretty cool. The cynic in me still wonders why people are inclined to formalize their relationship for friends and taxes, but a good time nonetheless. The open bar was distracting enough to compensate for the heat and cynicism.

Bah, I can't pretend to be that jaded, yet. It was very cool to see two people in their late fifties each marrying for the first time. In a gooey, romantic way, I was reminded that patience counts for something. No two ways about it, it's good to see people in love and very nice that I was asked to join them. However, if I ever write a song to that effect, I have a Vertabreaker or worse coming my way. shocked

Did you see GWAR yet? You mentioned that it was in the plans somewhere. I never really listen to them, but I've seen them twice and am very glad they exist. I'm in it for the show. Pink Floyd falls into the same category for me.

For the love of Gawd, feel well. You've been flirting with this thing for a couple of weeks, no? Bite your lip and give it hell.

kiss

hmmm. quick update, and then i need to start putting myself together. heh. here's my weekend, more or less.

1. going to see Antarctica vs. the World tonight at the Dixie.
2. worked last night at Snake's. it was pretty busy early, but everyone was cool/friendly/decidedly non-assholish. a lot of my friends came by, including JasonDemon, but unfortunately i was too busy bartending to...

I, too, had a week of getting out for the sake of getting out.

My experience in food and beverage sevice sounds similar to yours. Quietly resent the coke-heads and assholes, but give 'em some slack if the green matches the grunt.

Grits do have taste. Good taste, at that. I have a family that's largely from the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida, so I was weened on them. This far north, though, noses go up as soon as the g-word is mentioned. funny thing is that, when I was writing menus for resorts and B&Bs in Vt, I served grits daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Call them 'soft polenta' and, suddenly, mouths water. Yeah, there's a big difference, but those rubes never seemed to find it.

Good luck with the art gig. Discounted supplies are never to be taken lightly.

i was having trouble sleeping last night, so i got up, got dressed and went to the bar. the usual suspects presided. did run into a friend who had moved away and was back in town house hunting. said san fran was too expensive, but i'd still rather be there than here. i drank 4 beers in the span of two and a half hours,...

Nah I didn't get to watch it last night. I was workin. But I was thinkin of the shananagins Carlito was probably getting himself into. I did, however, watch the videos on WWE.com. Piper calling Carlito "Buckwheat" was funny. But the look on Carlito's face was even funnier.

I actually just got off of work. Feel like doing anything?

I had some masturbation dream last night... no, I'm not tryin to be controversial. It wasn't particularly impressive or anything... I just find it funny that it's always masturbation, never sex; it's like even my subconscious mind has given up on the idea that I will ever have sex again in my life. whatever

I'll tell you- summers halfway up the contry aren't much better, hon. The air here was sick today. Just oxygenless hot-blast mess.

All I know about NewAwlens I learned from The Man, Dr. John. Seriously, I've read part of his autobiography (was killing time in Toledo's huge library while my friend was at work), and I plan to finish the thing soon (I just recently found out it's in Arlington's library). Read about the Indians, and the Doctor broke down 1) neighborhoods's ethnicities, 1950s/60s, 2) the music scene (same), and 3) his bad adolescence drug-problems in the first few chapters.
I also have a few of his albums.

hmmm. where to start?

you see, i had lots of funny stories about the trip to Atlanta and the 4th of July party, and road signs in Alabama, and the like. but they're all kind of over-shadowed in my memory now by the hellish drive back through the tropical storm. i honestly did not believe we were going to make it home.

so my friend...

I myself am starting to swear off Gaelic whiskey... okay, I'll try a couple more... but when I say Red Breast tasted like cat piss, that is not in an attempt to compare it to something gross that it was not really like, but to be accurate.
Ancient Ancient Age is pretty good. Hearty. I would love to do a taste test, a blindfold one, of ALL the bourbons to prove I know what I mean. I'm quite sure I could recognize Beam as the worst (so far). I know I could recognize Jack... it'd be interesting to run up on Jack and Gent Jack in a blindfold test. They both have that rubbery tint, and I can't imagine why (casks made of old NBA balls?), but they are still far preferable to me than Maker's Mark, Knob's Creek, or Beam (not all bars have the 101 option, but it is I guess better than Jack... I still think Gent Jack is the smoothest, if not the best-tasting.... well, maybe Wild Turkey Rare Breed, which is better than 101).
When I was learning about bourbons, I came upon a website from a guy from Kentucky. He made it clear that was where his loyalty lay. He told the story that Jack Daniels (THE Jack Daniels) couldn't open his office safe one day, so he kicked it. The toe broke. Gangrene set in. That's how he died. The website guy was saying- a Kentucky gentleman wouldn't have behaved like that.
Well, maybe... but crazydasaint is right that Tennessee's Dickel #12 is very good, up there with KY's best. And Virginia Gentleman is okay (a KY/VA product).
I also think I could identify Old Grand-dad in a taste test; it's the sweetest. Old Whiskey River is slightly smoky; I don't go for smoky-flavored things much, but it might be my fave... and it's Willie Nelson-endorsed.

You can look for my other thoughts on booze at rateitall.com - I'm PattersonVanZant (note- I might've over-praised Gent Jack a bit, but that's how I felt at the time).

okay. so i am going to Atlanta this weekend. i'll be gone from Saturday afternoon-ish until probably Tuesday night.

i'm helping a friend from art school move all the junk from her studio to her new place. which is good, because since she's moving i won't have an opportunity to hang out with her again until... fuck knows when. then we're driving to somewhere north...

It could very well be the same recording.
I think on all of 1975 there's one song I don't like. One song. On two CDs. I can't remember which one it is offhand. I think it's "Mama, You Been On My Mind"? Or "Oh Sister"... anyway, 21 out of 22 ain't awful.

I read all the above. I don't want to just say something short but errr I'm at work... I will say- you don't have to consider yourself trapped anywhere for 5 years. You can go elsewhere during that time... I mean, if you're not signed into anything like a lease! Also, you might find things to do in NC... or not, but then you can go somewhere else before 5 years is up. I've been to NC last year and they let me out of the state a few days later, without a cavity search, baksheesh, or anything. smile
