The Singer

dances with me. Pirouettes,
sits,
doesn't sing.

After lovemaking and sleeping,
we talk of old and new
families, lay

our defenses
down.

Ballerina

I've recently fallen in love.
Again, as
my grandmother said.
Funny, huh? Shouldn't
that be life?

Love and love and love
again, until you get it right.

She laughs says-
older men have issues.

I laugh 'cause she's right
we do move with
this
sense of loss
of poss-
ibilities.

The years add burden
but if
you look
you see.

Young is unsettled and ready
to run. Old
is meek.

Youth teaches bravery
as years teach patience.

Oldie. (Edited)

She thinks of fusion then fission

She goes weak
at the sound of his words.

His ramblings send her.
For instance, she remembers

the words he spoke
last November,

he had said,

'Life's not a rehearsal

the work we do
in the here and now

is benediction.'

To her,
it sounds like a validation

of years
of struggle.

She wonders...

In High School,
I occasionally practiced
dressing as a poet,

thoughtful sweaters
and lots of hair,

listening to
lots of bands

with 'Dead'
or 'Death'
in the name. Wore

a black t-shirt
most days.

Camus.
Dostoevsky.
Hesse.

Reading alone.

I drank
two Dr. Peppers
and ate

two scoops
of ice cream
every day,

sat in one of two corners
at lunch.

Usually laughing
or arguing...

she lists the book from which
she has a quote tattooed
on her side
as
number nine

hopes
one day
to see her parent's house
burn

acts as the storm cloud
from Winnie-the-Pooh
while
trying to seduce you

all 'tut tut'
and no consequence
casually here
then gone

I know her real
name and realize enough things
to know it's fiction
that matters...
