Damn, I need to update this journal. Just got back for a month-long vacation, traveling from Mexico to France. Some interesting things happened. More coming soon.
I've been away for quite a while as I haven't had much time to spend home in front of my computer. It's summer and I NEED to be out, rather than being stuck in my oven-like apartment in Santa Ana.
I had a gig as a bartender, which was fun -- even though $6,000 were stolen from the bar (that wasn't me, I promise.)

It's been a while since I've been here but I have good excuses - My computer passed away - I ended up having to get a new one - and I went on a winery tour up North, with a friend who works in the wine industry. It was great to finally spend a few days doing nothing, just driving around, visiting small towns, talking...

That's lame if your friend ditched you to go with someone else. I was in Mexico all last week. Really it didnt matter where I was, as long as it wasn't at work.
If you go to Sigur Ros, let me know how it is. I have tickets for Beck and Garbage over the next few weeks, but I'm thinking I'll only make the Beck show.

The LA film festival has ended yesterday. It was fun and I'm always a bit sad when a festival is over, even though it was pretty tough to survive such a weird schedule for 2 weeks. Now the real work--writing--starts.
I saw a lot of films and my favorites remain Jim Jarmush's Broken Flowers, Gus Van Sant's Last Days as well as You, Me...

I planned my vacation and then invited my friends. I was worried they would flake, so I decided to go it on my own. About two weeks later they decided they would go too

My life has been pretty insane these last few days, since during the day I'm at my day job and at night I'm going to the LA film festival, which means spending 3 hours in traffic a day and never getting back home before midnight.

I'll have to remember that little trick should I find myself at the Melting Pot again.
I have tickets for Garbage too
I'm just praying I'll be in town for the show. I completely forgot about the sale for NIN so I may have missed my opportunity (unless I want to pay too much for good seats). However, I did see them at the Joint in April so I can't complain much (although missing QOTSA would be upsetting).

I haven't been home much lately. The Raveonettes show was a blast, probably my favorite show so far this year. That was my 1st time at Spaceland and the venue fit perfectly the band. The audience was a strange mix of hipsters, musicians, music producers, execs and actors--such as Giovanni Ribisi.

lacuna coil didn't exactly suck, i'd just say they were the least exciting band that played. i've seen them four times, and they always play the same sets, same kind of interaction with the crowd, and so on. and i don't really like andrea's voice.
but...long live heavy metal
ciao!

dimanche soir - I had a pretty good weekend. Was productive for once on a Saturday, getting a lot of things done. In the evening, went to see Kasabian. The show was great, way better than what I was expecting, but their music is a blend of pretty much all Madchester, from Happy Mondays to the Stone Roses, early Oasis and other acts such as...

I was amazed at how full the show was. Not at all what I expected. I actually think I saw you at one point (I was sitting in the first tier), but it was a quick glance and then you were gone...
After 10 years of fuckin' around, I finally made that big step today, to officially get back into music. I guess meeting so many guitarists - talented, known or obscure - woke my creative innerself up and made me realize the frustration of not having been active since my departure from France.

I'm not truly european. My father was military. I was just born in Europe, I am American. It does confuse some people though.
I ended up in OC by chance. I had honestly thought I was going to live in Santa Monica, but the prices were too high for me when I first moved out here (I had no job). So while I was out visiting for a week looking for a place, I got in my car and just started driving. I happened to exit on Jamboree and happened to find a place I could afford. I've been stuck ever since. I always think about moving to San Diego or LA, but my job is good so it's hard to leave. Someone needs to help me get unstuck!
Cool that you're getting back into music. You'll have to upload something for us to check out once you really get going...

I didn't do much this weekend, just going out at night and sleeping late. Went to my friend's Bday on Saturday night. She wanted us to go to a bar and then a club. While the bar was OK, the "club" was too nasty for me and I really didn't feel comfortable. A few amusing things happened though.

Ahh yes. Kasabian this weekend. I can't wait. I haven't been to the Galaxy in a loooong time.

Seriously, you had to watch White Noise? I am so sorry.

I just got home and am pretty exhausted. I didn't do much on Saturday but I went to have diner at the Gipsy Den in Santa Ana. The band, which was playing that night was kinda boring so I didn't stay there too long. After that, I went to check out a happening in some art gallery nearby. The show was a mix of live...

The techno scene in SD is definitely evolving. I've only lived in SD for 7 months, but when I first started living here in October, there was pretty much nothing going on as far as techno was concerned. Since then, some local techno lovers have been putting on a techno monthly the first Saturday of every month. It's been a pretty big success, and they are bringing in some pretty good DJ's and live acts. There is definitely a demand for techno here in SD.
I know a few people that are really involved in the LA techno scene. Mostly, they are in the Droid Behavior crew. Have you checked out their mailing list? Write to info@droidbehavior.com and ask to be subscribed. They will send you weekly emails updated with all the techno happenings in LA/OC/SD. There seems to be a lot going on...
But then again, I've never been a member of the techno scene in Europe so I have no idea how it compares.

The Cannes film festival has ended and I can finally get some rest - even though we still have a lot of articles to publish. I received yesterday my accreditation for the LA film fest, which will be a lot of fun to cover. Last week was pretty busy and, in addition, I had to deal with a family problem, which turned pretty nasty. It...

The concert last weekend was good, but I wasn't feeling all that well so I didn't enjoy nearly as much as I should have. They shouldn't have put Audioslave before Foo Fighters, they definitely stole the show (from a crowd perspective). And words just don't describe how I felt about Motley Crue, but it will suffice to say I left during the second song
I'm really looking forward to Fischerspooner on Friday night. Should make for a good start to next weekend.
I love Daniel Ash, but I've never seen him solo. Only ever seen him performing with Love & Rockets. Which reminds me of the time I met David J so long ago.
Lately I've been listening to music all over the place. For some reason I relapsed into the Stone Roses recently. Also in heavy rotation: Dresden Dolls, the new NIN, Snow Patrol, Kasabian. I have the new New Order cd, but I've yet to listen to it. How about you? WHat are you listening to these days?
Lynch showing a new film? You're such a tease

Finally one evening without work to do. I've been going out every night because one of my friends from Europe is in town + I've been working on Cannes stuff. I haven't had much free time for the last 7 days but fortunately things will come down at the end of the week.

hello there.
mmm, sorry to burst your bubble, but the audioslave one really really absolutely sucks. cause i said so. LOL.
no wonder theyw ere only allowing press to listen to 5 tracks in the label's offices, they were afraid about the things people could write BEFORE the release date. now, at least here in italy, most reviews will get published after the cd hits the stores, so most people will jump and buy it. LOL.
ok,ok,this is just my opinion at least
your work on cannes stuff sounds interesting
ciao!

I love Indie 103.1, but I have to see the Foo Fighters. I guess we'll call the Weenie Roast a guilty pleasure of mine.
I'm actually heading up to LA this weekend, but I doubt I can convince the girls to go to Ameoba. I think I'll have ot make another trip up on my own in the near future.
I've never seen Front 242 live. I considered going to that show, but passed for some reason that I can't recall. Speaking of shows, did you go to the free Audioslave show?
