show review.

As I expected The Gaslight Anthem was great live. They just got up there and tore through 6 or 7 songs. They opened with Great Expectations which is one of my favorites. Also played were 59 Sound, Old White Lincoln, Backseats, and then some from the old record that I don't have memorized yet. They got a good response which for an opening band is what you're really going for.

Thrice played next. Drew and I found two chairs, sat as far away from the stage, and as close to a bar as we could. That should tell you what I thought of Thrice.

Alkaline Trio.

I have a love/hate relationship with this band. Being a snooty indie rocker from chicago, i've seen this band a lot. I was at the release party for Goddammit, which funny enough was opened by Baxter (the singer of Rise Against's old band) about ten years ago. I probably haven't seen them live since Maybe I'll Catch Fire was released. Don't get me wrong. All in all I LOVE this band. LOVE LOVE LOVE. But when the 3rd full length came out and it was obvious that Matt Skiba had blown out his voice from various vices and more likely touring way too much I said that i was done with them. I stopped going to see them when they went from the Fireside to the Metro, stopped buying their records, and cringed when I saw their shit in Hot Topics everywhere. I've since gotten my hands on all their music and found the gems from each record.

As far as their set goes, they played really short, which is not their fault. We were just hoping to see them play for an hour instead of like 35 mintues. We weren't expecting much knowing how Skiba used to sound and how he's sounded for the last few years. Drew and I were both very pleasently surprised, and although the boy can't wail like he used to, they put down a real solid set.

Rise Against

We didn't stay for the whole set. I think they're a really great live band, but we were all a little (okay a lot) drunk by this point and kind of uninterested. For a major label punk/hardcore act you can't really go wrong with these dudes. Tim's voice is as kick ass as it was in the Baxter days and the band has a great stage presence. They sounded really good, actually better than good. We just didn't care.

drove through some serious winter stormage to get back to Vail this morning. Very low visibility and heavy usages of windshield washing fluid. Got back just in time for a call from my boss telling me that i didn't have to go into work today if i didn't want to.

which of course, i didn't want to.
